The Mission of VOMC
Part One
"Actively Remembering and
Serving the ‘Church Persecuted.”
~ VOMC's Mission Statement
Since the founding of the Voice of the Martyrs Canada (VOMC), the term “persecuted church” has been a primary descriptor in shaping the ministry’s communication strategy. Why, then, would we alter our Mission Statement to say, the “church persecuted”? This question necessitates a deeper understanding of the broader ministry of VOMC and its missional purpose. However, before we delve into this topic, let me clarify what we mean by the term “persecuted church.”

Today, VOMC continues Richard and Sabina Wurmbrand’s legacy of raising a voice for persecuted Christians worldwide. As they travelled the globe, the Wurmbrands challenged Christians to provide persecuted believers with the tools necessary to carry out the ministry of the church in regions hostile to the Gospel. VOMC does this same work today, acting as a conduit for bringing practical relief and spiritual support to members of the persecuted church internationally. In this context, the use of the phrase “persecuted church” is appropriate, as it represents a community of committed followers of Jesus Christ who gather regularly in a specific place to worship.
By carrying out projects of provision and encouragement, VOMC is able to continue serving the church in regions that are hostile or restrictive to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For example, VOMC recently assisted ministry partners in Nepal with the means to purchase 300 Bibles. These printed copies of God’s Word were delivered to Christians who had been eager to share the Gospel message with others but did not previously own Bibles from which to study. VOMC’s ministry partner, Pastor Khanal, provided the following update, which highlights the effectiveness of this Bible distribution:
“We first stopped at Heart of Jesus Bible School, where we distributed Bibles to students. These young believers are preparing to serve God, and having their own Bibles is crucial for their spiritual growth and studies. Many come from backgrounds where access to Bibles is difficult, so seeing their joy upon receiving [them] was heartwarming. These students have dedicated their lives to learning and spreading the Gospel, and we pray that the Word of God will equip them for their future ministries.
“I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude and thanksgiving to the Voice of the Martyrs Canada for your kind consideration in standing with us in prayer and faith. Also, thank you so much for your donation of Bibles to our students and to people who have no access to them.”
Ministry projects like this recent Bible distribution were an integral part of the Wurmbrands’ strategy to inspire Western Christians to move beyond mere advocacy and offer sacrificial support to those facing persecution for their faith. Sabina characterized this engagement as a form of fellowship – an enriching relationship where Christian brothers and sisters help one another grow towards the fullness of Christ. A vital aspect of such engaging fellowship is demonstrated by sharing in the sufferings of fellow believers, as instructed in Galatians 6:2: “Carry one another’s burdens and in this way you will fulfill the requirements of the law of Christ [that is, the law of Christian love]” (AMP).
Working for a ministry that uplifts and empowers the persecuted church is an immensely fulfilling experience. While VOMC evolved and broadened its strategic mission over the years, our ministry team has maintained a strong and dedicated commitment to provide needed support to the members of Christ’s church who suffer for their faith. By gleaning and embracing the profound lessons learned from the “persecuted church” in its global expression, the body of Christ can boldly approach the gates of hell, confident that the enemy’s schemes shall not prevail (Matthew 16:18).
Next month’s blog message will address the significant meaning of the “church persecuted” and why this term is essential to VOMC’s missional outlook.
